If you’re a fan of old school thrash/speed metal, then you’re in for a treat. The songs on the Soul Collector part of the In Union We Thrash split deliver thrashing power in their sound while retaining the spirit of thrash metal, which has been too often replaced with pretense in modern bands. They have their gloomy, dark and slower sides, their aggressive, fast, shouted vocal sides and their melodic solo, dual guitar harmony, culmination sides. The songs in general progress well, there are no sudden irrational jumps between the riffs and the song structure keeps surprising the listener, by being unpredictable, yet well put together. The solos are technical, but tasteful, bringing not just the good musicianship to the songs, but also the much needed emotion. The best part about the solos is their placement in the songs. As I said, they are often the culmination, which amplifies the emotion, that the solo brings into the song. Such well progressing parts of the song and variations between gloomy-thrashy-melodic song parts is in my opinion the strongest part of this half of the split. On the other side, the vocals, although the voice sounds great and quite a lot like Steve Souza’s vocals, which I am a big fan of, somehow the musicianship and production of the vocals seems “just not quite enough” compared to the superb riffing of the instrumental part of the band. Although from time to time some double bass sections do seem a bit out of place for my ears, in general the drums and bass sound heavy, somewhat old schoolish. The metallic rattle of the bass sounds superb and reminds the listener, why this genre is called heavy metal. In summation: it’s heavy, it’s thrash, it’s dynamic, it won’t let you get bored, it’ll collect your soul and will force your soulless body to listen to it multiple times
